This CD is devoted to the complete Ric/Ron catalogues of two R&B luminaries, neither of whom recorded enough material for Ric/Ron to fill a whole disc on their own. Many tracks have never been on CD before and all of them are presented here from fresh transfers of the original sources. Tommy Ridgley and Bobby Mitchell's careers began some years before they signed to Joe Ruffino's labels, but they cut some of their most enduring sides during their respective Ric/Ron tenures. They demonstrate how well New Orleans dealt with the transition of black American music from R&B to soul.
From rockabilly to rock & roll to r&b, Kent Records did it all and did it all very well from the late 50's until the early 70's.Taken from masters owned by Ace, this set offers forty eight rockin’ sides including thirty two unissued recordings from this California based powerhouse. This collection includes fine and unheard recordings from B.B. King, Hadda Brooks and Jimmy Witherspoon. Oddball favorites include Flash Terry and His Orchestra, Billy Ray and unknown Van Robinson in a raw over charged guitar blues.
This is the first comprehensive collection of Tampa's post war recordings (1945-53) done for the RCA label. This collection features some of the finest back up musicians of the era including Big Walter Horton, Sonny Boy 2, Little Johnny Jones and BIG MACEO. The fifty tracks have crisp sound and include four unreleased sides from the vaults of RCA-VICTOR label, as well as many tracks making their appearance on CD for the first time. Johnny Jones & Big Maceo get vocal slots and the best news is the dreaded blues kazoo doesn't make an appearance till track seventeen on the first disc!
Along with Sunny and the Sunliners and the Royal Jesters were one of the top R&B bands in San Antonio during the heyday of the "Westside Sound". Bringing together trio harmony vocals with top R&B backing, the group scored on many levels during the early 60's with local hits, top billing at dances and a strong local following. This meticulous collection has many of their biggest records for the San Antonio based Cobra and Jox labels and the informative booklet adds to the enjoyment of this forgotten American sound. If you like the early recordings of Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender this set will satisfy.
One thing is certain about the idiosyncratic J.B. Lenoir, he was a true original. No one ever sounded quite like him and despite comparisons by some writers to Arthur Crudup, his high pitched vocals were unique. Although J.B. Lenoir only had one hit in the US with "Mama Talk To Your Daughter" his influence over the British blues scene was immense. In fact John Mayall was a huge fan and he helped to get his 45s released in the UK. Lenior had rocking r&b along with topical social commentary all thrown in the mix.
This great sounding gap filler includes most of Boyd's small label recordings before moving overseas where he had a whole new career. Included are the wonderful recordings with Robert Jr. Lockwood, Eddie King as well as the few recordings he made in California for Jimmy McCracklin in the early 60's which included Lafayette Thomas on guitar.
