Peppermint Harris was a true original with a brilliant way with words which made him a superlative songwriter having many of his compositions recorded by top blues artists such as B.B. King and Bobby Bland. This is a must for blues fans and across the 56 tracks, there are many superb songs as well as his two hits Raining In My Heart which reached #4 in the 1950 R&B chart and more importantly the classic drinking song I Got Loaded which hit the #1 spot for two weeks in 1951. Although this excellent 2CD set is by no means complete, it does present the most comprehensive exploration of his work between 1948 and 1959.
This selection of Mickey Baker's solo recordings, along with a handful of his prominent session work all recorded between 1952 and 1959, show the fire of his guitar style. These selections truly display the breadth of Baker's talent as he plays several different styles with equal brilliance. There is no question of Mickey Baker's importance in the development of rock and roll and in particular rock and roll guitar. Included is his early 60's Atlantic release Wildest Guitar along with selected singles from the period.
Willie Littlefield has a long and distinguished career as a boogie pianist and R&B singer and was one of the greatest and most influential of the genre throughout the 1950s. Includes 28 rockin', rollin' and bluesin' tracks including Little Willie's Boogie, Swanee River, K.C. Lovin' (Kansas City) and many more.
This was one of the greatest bar bands of them all. Dr. Feelgood & The Interns or just plain Piano Red, as he was originally known, was a natural ball. Presented here are all of the singles, both sides, he released just as you would have found them on any jukebox from 1950 to 1962. Piano Red was a true original and of course another performer with a claim over "the first rock and roll record" with his debut double sided smash Rockin' With Red/Red's Boogie. This of course came many years before Bill Haley hit the scene.
One of the great voices in R&B, Big Maybelle was able to cover the full range of emotional songs from joyous up-tempo rockers to soulful ballads and sweet pop. This collection presents her classic Savoy recordings featuring the cream of New York session players as well as some hard to find live performances and the rare Cub LP under the alias "Mamie Webster".
This collection features three albums originally released by Buddah Records in the 1970's. Live & On the Move captures the band at its frantic best while many regard 100% COTTON as one of his best. High Energy is his collaboration with producer Allen Toussaint. All three of these albums have been difficult to find on CD for years.
