Discovered in his early 20s as a street busker in New Orleans, Eaglin went on to have a small, but interesting career recording his first tracks with Louisiana's folklorist, Dr. Harry Oster. These initial recordings are featured on Disc 1 whilst the second disc covers his hard to find blues and R&B recordings for the Imperial label. He went on to make a series of fiery recordings for the Blacktop Records label in the later years of his career which stand as a testament to his individual creativity.
Doctor Ross enjoyed a lot of success during the 1950s, his popularity was fueled by his stature as a true one-man-band playing every instrument during live performances and on many of his records. Ross' recording of Cat Squirrel in 1959 brought him international fame after it was recorded by UK acts, Jethro Tull and Cream. This is the most comprehensive collection of his early recordings released in the CD era.
Although he is chiefly remembered as an actor and voice-over specialist, Scatman Crothers also enjoyed a parallel career in music, which actually predated his acting career by a couple of decades. An experienced singer/drummer/guitarist, he'd been working since the early 1930s and was famously one of the first vocalists to improvise nonsense syllables to jazz tunes, hence the nickname 'Scat Man'. This compilation features his collectable 1956 LP Rock 'n' Roll with Scat Man, plus seventeen 'bonus tracks'.
Texas born Moon started out singing and playing western swing in the 1930s and finished his career singing and playing unadulterated honky tonk country in the 1960s. In between he recorded everything from sentimental hillbilly to groovy covers of current pop hits to highly convincing R&B and rock n' roll, always making room for the kind of music that kept dance floors full throughout the American south. This new collection focuses entirely on Moon's up-tempo recordings from 1949 to 1958. All of his popular fast tunes are here, from his big hit I'll Sail My Ship Alone to his original version of Jambalaya to the tracks he made with Boyd Bennett and his Rockets as accompanists, including the original of the peerless Seven Nights To Rock.
This is the first time that virtually all of Priscilla Bowman's recordings have appeared together presenting a unique portrait of one of R&B's most underestimated talents. She had been the vocalist with Jay McShann's band for some years when they signed with Vee Jay Records in Chicago. Their first release was the No 1 R&B smash Hands Off and after its success she was signed directly to the company. Her recording of A Rocking Good Way with the vocal group The Spaniels is the original version of this popular number.
The inimitable Joe Jones had a short-lived recording career which was soon overshadowed by his success as a producer, manager (of the METERS among others) and general backroom entrepreneur. This CD set includes his biggest hit, You Talk Too Much and includes California Sun which went on to become a hit for surf rockers, The Rivieras.
Rick Danko was a Canadian musician, bassist, songwriter and singer, best known as a member of The Band. After leaving The Band in 1977, Danko teamed up with bluesman Paul Butterfield touring together as the Danko/Butterfield Band. Among the songs they covered was Sail On, Sailor, originally recorded by The Beach Boys, with Blondie Chaplin, who toured with Danko/Butterfield, on guitar and vocals. This set is taken from a show recorded on Danko's 1979 tour with Butterfield at the legendary Huntington Beach venue The Golden Bear.
This set features music from Sahm's heyday solo years. Disc one is a live show from the Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia in 1973. The second disc is a Tex-Mex set recorded at Liberty Hall in Houston in 1974. Both have great sound quality and the performances are live and lively with the classic West Side Sound featured prominently on the first disc.
This live set (which has great sound quality) was recorded at Joe's Place in Boston on 5th April 1973. It contains a selection of his top tracks at that time including great versions of It Takes Time and Gamblers Blues. This set was previously released in the U.S. on the Rockbeat Record label under the name Double Trouble.
