Charlie Lange of Bluebeat Music has once again rounded up nine new re-issues from his vast inventory and shares his thoughts on these packages with our readers. Rather than label compilations that he presents from time to time, these offerings are all single artist CDs. Remember by clicking on any of the album cover art you will be sent directly to his site.
Joe Liggins was one of the top rhythm and blues performers of the immediate post war years. He enjoyed thirteen Billboard R&B chart hits between 1945 and 1951 at which point it was all over for him as a chart star, but as this twenty seven track compilation illustrates, he could still turn out great sounding records and was a popular live performer as well. The set includes his early Exclusive label hit recordings as well as his many remakes for Specialty and also includes his never digitally reissued sides for Mercury and Aladdin, including an unissued side.
Here are all of Roy Milton's Billboard R&B chart hits together in one neat package for the first time ever. Beginning in 1946, R.M. Blues rocketed to No. 2. It stayed on the chart for another twenty five weeks. Roy Milton enjoyed hits on the Billboard charts in all its different titles from 'Most Played Juke Box Race Records' to 'Hot R&B Sides'. This set is a "hit fest" with no less than twenty one of the twenty nine tracks charting in one form or another and includes never before reissued sides for King, Warwick and Lou Wa as well as some of the great sides he cut for Dootone.
This twenty eight track comprehensive overview of this Texas and West Coast legend is a great collection of the many styles and sounds of his recordings. From the early Charles Brown influenced sides with Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers to the rockin’ recording with his own band and songs like Hey Bartender. This set covers most of the bases of this wonderful and eccentric artist. The man known as Mr. Magnificent always lived up to that moniker as these sides attest.
Frankie Lee Sims is certainly not amongst the greatest innovators of rhythm and blues and certainly not very famous. He did however have a very original sound which did help to sell enough records, particularly in America's south, to ensure he was signed to four record labels during his brief career. This collection of his very limited recorded legacy is the most complete attempted and the first to gather together all 18 of his original released recordings in one place along with a further 11 tracks which were not issued at the time............
This special two CD collector's edition contains forty two re-mastered studio tracks, including all of the fabulous early singles. Both A and B sides Freddy King made for Federal Records between 1960 and 1962 are included here. The set also includes King's rare 1956 sides for the very small El-Bee label. This is the material upon which Freddy King's legend was built. It marks one of the most important building blocks of electric blues. This collection is an essential entry in any blues library.
One of the most important artists in post war California blues, Lloyd Glenn has been difficult to find on CD. This twenty eight tracker features his early hits as Lloyd Glenn & His Joymasters. Then it moves to some sides he cut with Lowell Fulson before settling in with songs from the Lloyd Glenn Combo. Featuring Gene Phillips, Bill Hadnott and Bob Harvey on drums, it doesn’t get any better than this.
This collection of 50's sides features William Thomas Dupree better known as Champion Jack in his prime and at the peak of his commercial success. Supported by such players as Mickey Baker, George “Harmonica” Smith, Larry Dale and Papa Lightfoot, these sides are the best examples of his talent. Drawing from the King, Harlem, JAX, Groove and Vik labels, this could be the best collection on the market.
Finally available again, Eddie Taylor's recordings for Vee Jay are a high water mark in Chicago Blues with his articulate guitar style and down home vocals. A major influence on so many guitarists and the driving beat behind so many artists sound. This set covers some of his sideman sides as well as most of the recordings he made under his own name.
This intimate and exciting set from Buddy guy, showcases how great he can be. Straight ahead covers of blues classics including a stellar cover of his mentor Guitar Slim and a few of his own songs with none of the annoying histrionics which have become his calling card in recent decades. This set is well recorded and the band, which includes Phil Guy and Ray Allison, shines throughout the proceedings.
