Welcome to the November, 2022, edition of BLUES JUNCTION.
Last month we attended an extraordinary event, The Redwood Coast Music Festival in Eureka, California. You can read about that experience here in this month's edition of our feature driven magazine. Three of the many artists whom we enjoyed up the coast last month are interviewed here this month. They are Sugar Ray Norcia, Joel Paterson and Duke Robillard.
On November 5th, we observed the 91st anniversary of the birth of Ike Turner. Our semi-regular Revisited feature has us taking a look at an incredible album that came out some time back on the Charley label called Trailblazer.
As much as we enjoy looking back, it is also enjoyable looking toward the future. With this in mind our Monthly Album Spotlight shines on a brand-new disc by a twenty-one-year-old phenom named Yates McKendree. Our special guest Craig Lawrence reviews Buchanan Lane. I’ve heard the album and it is good enough to make the cut and find its way into our November Recommended Listening feature.
I also review the “brand new” album by Mud Morganfield. This November 11th, Delmark Records release is Morganfield’s debut album on this iconic label. It is entitled Portrait. It is a good listen.
Here in America, November is a month in which on one specific Thursday we stop and give thanks for the bounty that has been bestowed on us. We use the occasion of the Pilgrims sharing a meal with the indigenous people to mark the holiday we call Thanksgiving. Those folks, who we have since dubbed “Indians” to pay homage to Columbus’ colossal miscalculation, had been on this continent for thousands of years prior to the Europeans' arrival. They welcomed the new settlers, fed them, shared some recipes and cooking tips. Well, you know the rest.
Humorist, Bill Maher has likened the observance of Thanksgiving to celebrating date rape. “Hey, what are you complaining about? Remember that great dinner we had at the beginning.”
Yet, despite the dubious origins of this holiday, the horrific history that followed and the weird traditions that came to mark this occasion, I stop and give thanks anyway. I have been particularly blessed with a great family, good luck, good fortune, good health and fantastic friends. Over these past several years I am very thankful to our loyal readership. You have been very supportive. Your kind words for our modest little endeavor that is BLUES JUNCTION mean a lot.
So, from the bottom of my heart I say THANK YOU. Until we meet again be well and be in touch.
- David Mac
