Little Willie Littlefield was a Texas born pianist and vocalist. He was a pioneer of early rhythm & blues. He possessed a riveting full throated voice and was credited as popularizing the piano triplet in blues. He made his first record Little Willie's Boogie in 1947 at the age of sixteen. Modern Records got wind of this child sensation and signed him to their label. He had a successful run through the early 1950s including the charting hit It's Midnight. He switched to King Records in 1952 and recorded the very first version of Lieber and Stoller's Kansas City (recorded by Little Willie as K.C. Lovin'). Little Willie Littlefield would relocate to Northern California in the late 1950s. In the 1970s he began touring Europe. He ended up relocating there as he found a home and a wife in the Netherlands. He lived there for the rest of his life. Little Willie Littlefield was respected and revered as an exemplary American blues legend. He succumbed to a long battle with cancer on June 23rd at age 81. With the passing of Little Willie Littlefield we say farewell to perhaps the last Texas/West Coast piano legend of the 1950s. Thank you Willie, for showing us how it is done.
