I recently received an email asking me who won the Battle of the Blues Harps. I explained to one of our readers that it wasn’t exactly a battle. It was just a bunch of great musicians making music. Nobody was firing Hohners across the ballroom at one another. It wasn’t a battle in the strict sense of the word. We are all competitive to various degrees and I guess that’s where award shows fit into the picture.
You can’t really have Katherine Hepburn wrestling Betty Davis to determine who wins the Academy Award for Best Actress. It just wouldn’t be dignified. Well folks, award shows aren’t dignified either. They are however good for business and our business needs some good so we have the Blues Music Awards. The former Handy Awards nominations were announced a couple of weeks ago and I wasn’t going to say anything... but I just can’t help myself.
For the most part, the good folks at the Blues Foundation did their homework. In some cases they didn’t. In one case they simply let a big white elephant in the room and pretended it didn’t pass wind. “Black balling” a musician because of politics has no place in the Blues community. That’s not what we are about. The Blues Foundation however was nothing if not predictable. I confess I am just as predictable in that I have some alternative points of view on their nominations. Who didn’t see that coming?
The following are my musings on the subject, nothing more, nothing less. The one thing about award shows, it stimulates discussion and that is a good thing. As always I welcome your thoughts on this subject. I am sure I have overlooked a thing or two, myself. Additionally I enjoy hearing other people’s points of view.
The Blues Music Awards are known as the BMA’s. With that in mind BLUES JUNCTION Productions hasn’t named its picks. So pardon us if we don’t call them the BJ’s. After all, I think it is important to remain dignified. Enjoy….

BJP Musings
BET ON THE BLUES – PAUL OSCHER
|
Wouldn’t logic follow that PAUL OSCHER should be my pick here. |
1) JIMMIE VAUGHAN PLAYS BLUES BALLADS & FAVORITES 2) Deep in America – The Hollywood Blue Flames 3) Shake for Me – The Mannish Boys 4) Tuxedo Blues – Roy Gaines 5) Reform School Girl – Nick Curran |
JANIVA MAGNESS |
JIMMIE VAUGHAN & THE TILT A WHIRL BAND |
JD McPHERSON - SIGNS & SIGNIFIERS |
NAME THAT DAY – JOHN NEMETH |
1) JANIVA MAGNESS 2) Ruth Foster 3) Shemiekia Copeland 4) Candye Kane 5) Bettye LaVette |
I don’t make a distinction between contemporary Blues and traditional Blues as it relates to these particular artists. I can try and think of who is more contemporary. I would rather go with who I think is more hip, relevant. I’ll go with the youngest guy on the list. The new Daddio!!! JOHN NEMETH |
I’m not a film critic.
|
BOB CORRITORE & FRIENDS - HARMONICA BLUES |
1) LARRY TAYLOR 2) Ronnie James Webber 3) Bill Stuve 4) Mac McMurray 5) Larry Fulcher |
1) RICHARD “Big Foot” INNES 2) George “Big Head” Rains 3) Wes “Big Hair” Starr 4) Willie “Big Eyes” Smith 5) Jimi “Big Sticks” Bott 6) Tony “Big Smile” Braunagel |
1) JIMMIE VAUGHAN 2) Jr. Watson 3) Duke Robillard 4) Ronnie Earl 5) Nick Curran |
KIM WILSON |
Sonny Rollins… just kidding. OK I’ll play nice. DOUG JAMES who toured with both his long time running buddy Duke Robillard as well as Jimmie Vaughan this year. |
This is a dumb category and I don’t have to play if I don’t want to. |
RUTHIE FOSTER even though she is in the wrong category here. |
1) FRED KAPLAN 2) Dr. John 3) Joey De Fransesco (sorry, that’s not fair) 4) Bruce Katz 5) Ivan Neville |
PASS
|
FLY LIKE AN EAGLE, CRY LIKE A LONESOME DOVE (AL BLAKE) THE HOLLYWOOD BLUE FLAMES
|
The Best Soul Blues record is John Nemeth’s release but I will play along on this one and go with TAD ROBINSON’S BACK IN STYLE I however would love to see the great Arthur Adams win this award. He has never received the recognition he deserves in his long and destinguished career. |
BETTYE LAVETTE…. Hello! |
Where is John Nemeth? What am I missing here? OK… I’ll play along TAD ROBINSON… I have another question. If Arthur Adams is nominated for Soul – Blues album of the year would it stand to reason that he should be nominated for Soul – Blues male artist as well? |
SHAKE FOR ME - THE MANNISH BOYS |
AL BLAKE |
