On September 11, 2011 the Southern California blues community came together again to help one of its own. Just weeks after the tribute/benefit for Joe Houston, we got together again to do good. Many of the same people who attended the Joe Houston gig on July 17th at the El Dorado in Long Beach, showed up to lend their support to this event to help out Paul Fasulo.
Paul Fasulo is a drummer who has been a fixture on the Southern California blues scene for many years. His impressive list of recording credits goes on forever. Up until very recently Paul was on tour with Candye Kane. He was forced to leave that tour a few weeks ago when he was diagnosed with liver cancer.
Before the night was over he was presented with $4000 dollars in cash. On the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11, I can’t think of a better way to honor the victims of that massacre by doing what good Americans are supposed to do, and that is help one another. We did this while we danced to the great American music that is the blues. The entire afternoon was dripping with good spirit.
The event was put together by Mike “Pink” Arguello of 2000 Lbs. of Blues fame. Mike worked tirelessly to insure this event was a success and then made sure the show ran smoothly. Mike reached out to many of us here in Southern California that he knew he could count on to help him get this thing on the hump.
Jayne Intveld in particular worked assiduously as she always does at these types of events. Jayne and her “crew” ran the raffle and merchandise table, which was a big part of what made this event a success. Kudos go out to all those who donated raffle items and CDs.
I would also like to thank two members of the BLUES JUNCTION Productions family who could not attend but were there in spirit nonetheless. Thanks to photographer, Mike Lovato and painter, Cindi Bernhardt for their contributions.
Barry G and DJ Art Martell helped manage the stage and acted as M.C’s throughout the afternoon.
So many people did so much to help make this event a success that I am bound to leave someone out. Please accept my apologies for any omission. It is not intentional. The musicians who came by and shared with us their talents were James Harman, Junior Watson, King Cotton, the Bonedaddys, Mike Tempo, Kirk Fletcher, Henry Carvajal, Whiteboy James, Cadillac Zack, Mitch “Da Switch” Dow, Johnny Rover, Lil‘ A and the Allnighters, Mike Barry, Steve F’dor, Michael Fell, Bill Bateman, Johnny Ray Bartell, Larry “Big House” David, Flat Top Tom, Jill Sharpe, Billy Watson and John Marx.
Please note that San Diego based blues stalwart Chet Cannon of the band Chet and the Committee is trying to put together a similar event for Paul in San Diego. We'll keep you posted.
