On January 23, 2016, in Sioux City, Iowa, at a campaign rally, the man who is currently occupying the oval office said, “I could stand on 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.” He was right.
He would go on to say one outrageous, disgusting and patently offensive thing after another and go on to lose the National Election by three million votes, but assumed the office of the Presidency anyway.
Now his numerous offensive remarks have become the stuff of infamy and have made our country, the United States of America, the laughing stock of the world. His corruption and incompetence are at a level like we have never seen...ever. While political scientists discuss the chaos theory of political stratagems, I think of it simply as chaos.
Read a fine piece by Eric Lieberman in which he tries to make sense out the nonsensical. -David Mac
Editor’s note: The surname of the current So Called Leader of the United States is in lowercase, as there is no respect for the name or the person carrying it.
At this point in time, it appears that the incredibly stark divide between those who lionize trump and those who abhor him has virtually nothing to do with politics, but is more logically explained by a difference in human brain wiring that may be more akin to how science has shown that certain people are more wired than others to believe in God.
If this were really about politics, left vs. right, Democrats vs. Republicans or liberals vs. conservatives, the national conversation would be primarily about policies - domestic and foreign, immigration, tax reform, health care, how to best protect the environment, job creation, economic growth and what America's foreign policy should be with regard to Syria, Afghanistan, North Korea, Russia and China. While I do acknowledge that these issues are still present, they seem to now exist only at the periphery of our national conversation, almost as an afterthought to the all consuming issue of whether trump is the worst or best president this country has ever known, whether he has no right to even occupy the Oval Office and should be impeached yesterday, or whether he will hopefully not only serve out this term, but will be elected for four more years in 2020.
Further evidence that this is so far removed from politics in the traditional sense, based upon actual policies, is that trump supporters seem to support him regardless of what he says or does. This is unlike the way in which Republicans reacted to Nixon after Watergate or Democrats reacted to LBJ after his escalation of the Viet Nam war and his misleading the country about the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Hell, even a large swath of Obama supporters were openly critical of him after he failed to get a single payer health care bill passed, raised the income level for a tax increase from $250,000 to $450,000 per year, and increased our troop presence in Afghanistan before a drawdown.
What is so uniquely different about trump supporters is that they seem to either be oblivious, or just don't care how incompetent he is, how many daily blunders he commits, how little of his promised agenda he has accomplished or how much he attempts to thwart our Constitution and show not only indifference, but outright contempt for the separation of powers, that is the true bedrock of our democracy.
According to various news sources, trump has lied between 213 and 415 times in his first one hundred days in office, and there have been 134 lawsuits filed against him in federal court during that same period. He has spent almost every weekend at his Mar-A-Largo resort in Palm Beach, at a cost of three million dollars per weekend to the American taxpayer, while his wife stays at trump tower in NYC, at a taxpayer cost of approximately one million dollars per day. I really need just one trump supporter to tell me he or she would have been ok with Barack Obama doing this.
I truly believe that if most trump supporters witnessed anyone else acting with half the degree of narcissism, immaturity, vengefulness, incompetence and lack of patriotism that trump has continued to display day in and day out for the past two years that they would come to abhor that person very quickly. You know the expressions, "Nobody likes a braggart!" "Nobody likes a bully!" "Nobody likes a show-off!" "Nobody likes a big mouth!" "Nobody rewards incompetence!" But with this guy and his supporters, all of that common sense rational for human behavior goes right out the window. There is a whole new set of rules when it comes to the dictator, which in my estimation boils down to ‘He can do no wrong, no matter how much wrong he does!’ He's treated like a deity, our own Kim Jung Un.
When I first started thinking about this, I thought trump supporters are not bad people, but are really terrible judges of character, that they can't see when someone constantly lies, shows a complete lack of integrity, and is both mean and petty, but after further reflection, I don't think this is the case most of the time. As I stated above, I believe the same individuals who are blind to the dictator's inexcusable loathsome character, would feel great disdain for you or me or anyone else who acted even half as badly. So, what I still can't understand is why the completely different set of rules for this guy? Is he a deity? Because if he's not, if he's really just a mere human like the rest of us, why are you not judging his character the same as you'd judge anyone else's?
Please don't tell me it's because "He's stirring things up."
This ain't a fuckin' game we're playing here.
