World Class Blues in the O.C.

J.R. Present’s… inaugural blues show on August 29^th 2011 was a success beyond anyone’s wildest imagination and I have a pretty wild imagination. The room was packed. Folks got there early and stayed late. As it turns out there are blues music fans here in Southern California with discerning taste willing to go beyond the pedestrian.

A look around the room would tell you that this was not your typical Sunday afternoon blues crowd. The Southern California blues luminaries that showed up to this afternoon were too numerous to mention. I will try and do my best. In the house was Jeff Scott Fleenor of Delta Groove Records and long time host of the Blues Disease at KUCI 88.9FM. Also in attendance was the founder and president of Straight up Blues Productions and host of his own Straight up Blues Show on KSPC 88.7FM, Art Martel. The founder and president of Rip Cat Records, Scott Abeyta was on hand as well for the festivities. Musicians Al Blake of the original Hollywood Fats Band and the Hollywood Blue Flames, Mike “Pink” Arguello of 2000 Lbs. of Blues, Dennis Herrera, Johnny Rover, Parker Macy and others came to hear the Nathan James Trio with special guests James Harman and Junior Watson.

The back patio smelled of cool ocean breezes, J.R.’s BBQ and, at various times throughout the afternoon, Watson’s cigars. Also In the house, blues fans were treated to a rare special appearance by the legendary organist/pianist from Rockford, Illinois, Jazzy Mom MC. That’s right my mother showed up. Based on the success of this show as well as J.R.’s dogged determination to reinvigorate the Southern California blues scene with quality music such as this, the program at the Tiki Bar will become an ongoing event. On the 16^th of October, J.R. presents his second show. On this Sunday evening enjoy the 44s with special guest Kid Ramos.
